The Artisan's Eye for Detail

Beautiful bags aren’t made only from the parts that stand out.
leather works KATSUYUKI TANAKA, crafted one by one by artisan Katsuyuki Tanaka at his atelier in Sapporo, Hokkaido.
From design, cutting, stitching, to finishing.
One artisan works closely with the leather, carefully assessing its unique qualities, to craft each piece into something that will last for years.
One thing that symbolizes this approach is the 'koba'—the cut edge of the leather.
Through repeated careful polishing and finishing with heat, it brings out both a beautiful appearance and durability.
On the other hand, depending on the design, sometimes they intentionally skip detailed polishing, letting the sharp cut edge of the leather stand on its own.
Rather than repeating a fixed method, they choose the best way to craft each bag, deciding what looks most beautiful for it.
This is where the artisan’s sense of aesthetic is reflected.
And what supports the bag’s strength is 'total hand stitching'.
They stitch high-stress areas like handles and base leather, adjusting their pressure with every stitch.
Saddle stitching with high-quality linen thread not only provides strength and flexibility, but the three-dimensional stitch itself becomes part of the bag’s character.
What we aim for isn’t a bag that’s only beautiful the moment you buy it.
It fits comfortably in hand, develops a rich patina, and carries the marks of its owner’s time.
As the years pass, it becomes even more beloved.
It’s not about efficiency, it’s about putting in the care.
It’s not about trends, it’s about making what they truly believe is beautiful.
The time and skill accumulated in the hard-to-see details.
Each of these things gives KATSUYUKI TANAKA’s bags a quiet, lasting presence.
