The choice of vegetable-tanned leather

The most important thing ATELIER LUTÈCE prioritizes when crafting leather goods is honoring the inherent beauty of the materials themselves.
That is, "making the most of the charm of the materials themselves."
No matter how elegant the design or meticulous the craftsmanship, a leather good will never be truly loved for generations if the leather itself lacks inherent appeal.
That’s why we will never compromise in the slightest when selecting materials.
At ATELIER LUTÈCE, we carefully select vegetable-tanned leathers primarily sourced from Italy, and craft each product to preserve as much of each hide’s unique character as possible.

The Inherent Charm of Vegetable-Tanned Leather
Vegetable-tanned leather is leather that’s been tanned slowly and carefully using natural tannins extracted from plants.
This isn’t a material suited for mass production that prioritizes efficiency, but in exchange, every single hide has a unique character, and the more you use and break it in, the more its luster and color deepen and grow richer—this is its greatest appeal.
A brand-new leather good is not the finished version.
Pick it up every day, toss it in your bag, tuck it in your pocket, and sometimes set it on your desk.
Over days and days of these small, everyday moments, the leather will gradually deepen in color, develop a beautiful, even sheen, and transform into a one-of-a-kind piece that belongs only to its owner.
This transformation is also a testament to the owner’s life and time being reflected directly onto the leather.
That’s why we value the "time it takes for the leather to mature" more than the phrase "aging."

Every Piece of Leather Has Its Own Unique Character
The leathers we use at ATELIER LUTÈCE each have their own distinct appeal as well.
Pueblo leather has a distinct, washi-like appearance, and develops a stunning luster the more you use and break it in.
Minervalisio boasts a rich, smooth texture and a beautifully transparent patina as it ages.
Cordovan has a one-of-a-kind luster born from its dense fibers and a powerful, striking presence.
No single leather is superior to the others.
Each has its own character, and each matures in its own unique way.
The wrinkles, grain variations, blood veins, and scars that are unique to natural leather are all one-of-a-kind features that belong only to that specific hide.
We don’t hide these features; instead, we cherish them as part of the leather’s inherent character.

We Want to Deliver the Material’s Inherent Beauty, Unaltered
Our role is not to alter the leather’s unique character.
It’s to understand the inherent appeal of the material and bring it out to its fullest potential.
We avoid adding unnecessary processing, and craft each product to preserve the leather’s natural character.
And it’s to deliver leather goods that will grow more beautiful over the years and decades alongside the person who uses them.
A leather product is only completed by the person who uses it.
We consider that entire span of time, from start to finish, as part of the craft of making each product.
